# LESSON 154 · CEFR B2
Economics and Consumer Decisions
Consumers tend to spend less when prices rise sharply.
1. Scarcity และ opportunity cost
A family that spends more on rent may have less available for transport, education or saving.
Opportunity cost
The opportunity cost of attending a full-time course may include both tuition fees and the income the learner gives up while studying.
2. Demand และ price response
Demand is likely to fall when the price rises, other things being equal.
- necessity vs luxury
A small increase in the price of an essential medicine may have little immediate effect on demand, whereas the same percentage increase for an optional subscription may lead many users to cancel.
3. Substitutes และ complements
Substitutes:
Complements:
Consumers evaluate not only the purchase price but also the future cost of complementary products and services.
4. Total cost of ownership
- purchase price
- delivery/installation
- energy use
- maintenance
- subscription
- resale value
- switching cost
Although the efficient appliance costs more initially, lower electricity use may make it less expensive over its lifetime.
5. Discounts และ reference price
The discount may encourage customers to buy more than they need.
Was 2,000; now 1,000
Spending 1,000 baht on an unnecessary item does not create a 1,000-baht saving simply because the label says “50% off”.
6. Bundles และ unit price
Buy three for 240 baht / one for 90 baht
unit price:
The bundle offers a lower unit price, but it is economical only if the consumer would otherwise buy and use all three items.
แยก cheaper per unit จาก lower total spending
7. Information asymmetry และ trust
- warranty
- independent certification
- return policy
- standard disclosure
- verified reviews
Businesses have to balance short-term profit with long-term trust.
8. Social proof และ reviews
A high rating may reduce uncertainty, particularly when consumers cannot inspect the product directly.
- verified purchases
- recency
- incentives/fakes
- relevance to use case
A 4.8 rating based on twelve reviews may provide less reliable information than a 4.5 rating based on several thousand recent purchases.
9. Framing, defaults และ limited attention
Framing:
90% fat-free vs contains 10% fat
Default:
subscription renews automatically unless cancelled
Limited attention:
Consumers may focus on the monthly payment and pay insufficient attention to the total amount repayable.
10. Sunk cost และ switching cost
Sunk cost
I have already paid for six months, so I must keep using a service that no longer meets my needs.
ควรเปรียบ future benefit กับ future cost
Switching cost
Moving to another provider may require data migration and retraining, so staying can be rational even when the rival price is lower.
Plan A:
Plan B:
- A = 12,000 + (600 × 24) = 26,400
- B = 3,000 + (1,100 × 24) = 29,400
Plan B has a much lower initial price, but its total two-year cost is 3,000 baht higher. It also creates a switching cost through the cancellation fee. Plan A is therefore less expensive over the full period, provided that the user can afford the higher upfront payment and expects to keep comparable monthly usage.
12. Consumer policy และ fairness
- transparent total price
- cooling-off period
- standardised comparisons
- limits on misleading claims
- easy cancellation
- financial literacy
Disclosure is useful only if information is clear, timely and presented before the decision, rather than hidden in lengthy terms after payment.
- ตรวจ substitutes/complements
- ประเมิน information source และ framing
- แยก sunk cost จาก relevant future cost
- ใช้ demand law โดยไม่กล่าว other factors
- Total cost
- Reviews/claims
- Default/fee/framing
